Phil Kean (aka #brainyxinja) has recently joined Xinja’s marketing team, and functions as the team’s analytical mind (working alongside the heart, #digixinja). Through analytics, data strategy and marketing automation Phil will ensure that Xinja is able to deliver a highly personalised and efficient service to each of our customers, helping them to make better, faster money decisions with less angst.
Phil joins us just are we are rolling out our first products and as he returns home every night (avoiding the cats that are mysteriously attracted to him), he reflects on the fact that he couldn’t have joined Xinja at a more exciting time!

Tell us what you do at Xinja
I’m the Performance and General Marketing Manager at Xinja. I have to keep a finger on the pulse of our marketing to make sure we are in good shape, as well as designing and maintaining our customer journeys across our ever expanding brand.
I especially love the word ‘general’ being in my job title as I have a habit of getting myself involved in all kinds of things at a start-up!
What is your Xinja origin story?
I just got back from some time living and working in London, while there a good friend of mine who works in the Fintech industry was picking my brains about the state of digital banking. He was the one to mention Xinja just starting out as a fresh and exciting new Aussie start-up. I reached out to the Xinja team and a few coffees later I was sold!
What does a typical day look like for you?
Right now? It’s hard to say. Everyday I’m discovering new ideas and initiatives from across the team. After my first week I feel like I’m still putting things together as I begin to really appreciate the opportunity that we have to truly make a difference. Maybe check back in after a few more weeks!
Who do you work with and how does the team run?
I work with Camilla, our Marketing Director, #digixinja and #dataxinja mostly. At the moment it’s all about bringing our ideas into the world, it can be a little challenging but I feel pumped about the talent and passion for the brand flowing through the office.
What are you most proud of working with Xinja?
Xinja is all about empowering consumers. Working with a platform that will educate, manage and grow the finances of Australians is really incredible!
What have you learned in your time working at Xinja?
That now is the time – technology has opened up so many doors for new businesses and ideas to enter the mainstream market locally and globally. If we can take on a substantial industry like banking then who knows what the future holds!
What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?
Seeing our card in the wild, I’m going to get excited the first time I see someone I don’t know pull out a Xinja card to make a payment.
What technology are you most excited about?
If I was forced to pick one I’d go with augmented reality, the implications of being able to free our digital perspective from the bounds of a screen and be seamlessly integrated with our everyday experiences. That or hoverboards (without ANY wheels).
If you weren’t at Xinja, what would you be doing?
Hmm.. good question, probably working on digital marketing somewhere less exciting.

What is your Spirit Animal?
I love all kinds of animals but apparently it would be some sort of cat?.. See “Unexpected fact”
I’m always at my happiest surrounded by friends and family but I also enjoy the odd bush walk, learning a skill or trying a new experience.
I have this odd connection with cats, they seem to be drawn to me. My family had a beautiful tortoiseshell cat growing up so maybe word got out that I wasn’t too bad. Cats I don’t know will often come to me and occasionally follow me home – my wife thinks it’s a bit weird.
