Russ is our new Digital Marketing & Communications Manager. His rather long, all-encompassing job title is down to the fact that his role will extend to all and any tasks that could possibly fall within the remit of a marketing department.
He enjoys writing about himself in the third person, so much so that although it’s only his first week, he’s decided to interview himself for the Xinja blog.
Marketing is crucial as it will be driving our strategy
Tell us what you do?
I’m Digital Marketing & Communications Manager. It’s an extremely varied role that could include anything (whether marketing, PR or event management) that will help us to build Australia’s first digital only bank. That means typical digital marketing activities like Google search and social media to an almost infinite number of other things from managing Eric’s conference presentations, helping with app usability sessions to ensuring we have enough Xinja t-shirts for all of our staff.
Marketing is an absolutely crucial function as it will be driving our strategy. We’re building a bank for our customers, so it’s through our marketing activities that we’ll find out exactly what they want from us.
What is your Xinja origin story?
It all happened very quickly! About 3 weeks ago, a friend of mine tagged me in a LinkedIn job post Betsy had shared. That day I met Camilla (Marketing Director), a few days later Eric and now here I am. I feel very lucky to have been in the right place at the right time.
I come from a digital agency background and in my last role I worked for a very similar company in another industry – a disruptive start-up energy company called Mojo Power. I was Mr. Watts from the electricity company!
What does a typical day look like for you?
Well, since this is day five that’s a tricky question. All I know at this stage is that there is no such thing.
What are you most proud of working with Xinja?
I haven’t stopped smiling since I started here! I’m so proud to be building something new and innovative that will make everyday life a bit fairer for ordinary Australians.
What have you learned in your time working at Xinja?
So much, but about 0.5% of what I will learn! As our blogger, I’m going to be bringing our Xinjas the latest and greatest from the worlds of neobanks, digital payments, cryptocurrency, AI & the internet of things. I’ll need to become an expert in each of these areas and so much more.
What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?
Of course, we’re all ridiculously excited about our big launch in February, but there is much more to look forward to before then. Just yesterday (my 4th day) we announced that we were allowing customers to own a piece of the business through equity crowdfunding. That hasn’t been done before in Australia.
If you weren’t at Xinja, what would you be doing?
I’d like to think I’d be at another similar company helping to create something similarly innovative and disruptive.
List 3 words to describe Xinja?
Fun, fresh and fair.
What is your Spirit Animal?
Like my fellow Xinjas, it would have to be another ocean-dwelling species as I’m never out of the water (I try to swim daily) – we already have two dolphins, so can I just say ‘fish’?
Swimming and just generally enjoying the beautiful beaches and oceans of Sydney and its surroundings.
I’m originally from the UK and have been living and working in Australia for 9 years now. A few years before that, I was here as a backpacker and did some very random jobs, including fruit-picking (peaches and pears) and driving a minibus for a hostel.
